I am a Registerd Dietitian. And, I am a wellness provider. I strongly support HB 2570.
to those of you reading this... be very careful. Know your sources of information...
HB 2570 is only about transferring kuleana from DOH to DCCA. This is NOT an issue of whether RDs should be licensed. Pau already, we have licensure. Anyone else who is interested in getting a license is welcome to do so. I support you. This is not a national issue. This is a local issue. This is about increasing access to care for populations in Hawaii of need, such as Medicaid patients.
Again, beware of the quackery being displayed against HB 2570. Educate yourselves and do not sign petitions randomly put out there by midled, uninformed people who stand to have financial gain with "you" on their side.

Comment by Your Health Hawaii on March 30, 2012 at 11:13am Thank you for your post and perspective as a licensed dietician.
All modalities that are working in the field of nutrition which is about 150+ including nutrtionist, acupuncturist, chiropractic, personal trainers, colonic hydrotherapists, health food stores, naturopath doctors, osteopaths....are in full support of dieticians being able to bill insurance and the other goals that I understand that are included in this bill SB2570. I am sure that there is a way you can still accomplish your goals and at the same time not hurt and close down the other 150+ modalities that work within the nutritional field at the same time.
At this time since the legislature had time to really understand what this bill would mean to so many businesses in the health/wellness field and all people with a degree in nutrition specifically would receive a cease and desist letter to close their business immediately have chosen to
defeat this bill for the 2012 session. The main issue with the bill the way it was written is the description of "dietician" is too broad and would encompass anyone working within the scope of food, human body, nutrition etc. and would not be able to practice even with a college degree or certification within that field.
Another main concern is the word "unlicensed". Anyone who is not licensed would not be able to practice and also means if they do not have "licensure" in the State of Hawaii. Again which would effect all nutritionist, colonic hydrotherapist, personal trainers, health food stores, life coaches etc. who are licensed through accredited colleges and programs that offers certification but not "licensure" in the State of Hawaii and if this bill was passed would be told to close their business immediately.
In the future all businesses in the health/wellness field and specifically within the scope of nutrition, the human body, food ect. are in full support of dieticians moving forward with their goals. I am sure there is a way another bill can be written so you can accomplish these requests but not harm the other modalities at the same time and close their businesses down because they are not a licensed dietician or have "licensure" in the State of Hawaii.
